A new rehabilitation programme targeting sex offenders is set to be introduced in Jamaica this year, as part of efforts to reduce repeat offences and support reintegration.
Commissioner of Corrections, Retired Brigadier Radgh Mason, made the announcement during the opening of the Montego Bay Probation Office, highlighting the facility’s role in strengthening public safety and supporting the Sex Offender Registry.
Mason said the initiative will take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach, addressing factors such as substance abuse, social influences, and lifestyle behaviours. Developed with input from local and international experts, the programme aims to lower recidivism both in custody and after release.
He added that offenders will receive psychosocial support, skills training, and assistance through partnerships with government agencies.
Meanwhile, Acting Registrar Melissa Dobson reported that 502 individuals are currently listed on the Sex Offender Registry. Access remains restricted to authorised agencies, with any move to make it public requiring parliamentary approval.
The registry, established under the Sexual Offences Act, continues to monitor individuals convicted of serious sexual crimes, as debate persists over balancing public safety with the risk of stigma and vigilantism.
