The Government of Saint Lucia has clarified that it has not granted permission for ride-sharing company Uber to operate within the island, amid growing public discussion surrounding the service’s reported launch.
Tourism Minister Dr Ernest Hilaire confirmed that no authorization has been issued to Uber by the Phillip J. Pierre administration. He stated that while the company had previously expressed interest in entering the local transportation market, formal approval was never granted.
According to government officials, initial contact was made by Uber in December as part of exploratory talks. However, authorities say discussions did not result in an operating agreement, and no licence or regulatory clearance has been issued for the company to provide transport services.
The clarification follows reports and online claims suggesting Uber had begun operating locally, raising concerns among transport stakeholders and taxi operators. Government representatives noted that any introduction of ride-sharing services would require structured consultations and regulatory review before approval.
Officials also emphasized that engagement with industry groups and other stakeholders would be necessary before any decision is made regarding app-based transport services in Saint Lucia.
