JPS Reports Theft and Damage of Transformers Intended for Hurricane Restoration Work in Westmoreland

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says several transformers earmarked for electricity restoration work in Westmoreland have been vandalised and stripped of key components after being targeted by thieves.

In a statement released Tuesday, the power company said the units had been secured on the grounds of a church as part of staging arrangements ahead of restoration activities linked to Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts.

According to JPS, the equipment was positioned at the location overnight to allow crews to begin installation early the next day. When technical teams arrived on site, they found the transformers had been tampered with and taken apart, with copper materials removed from inside the units.

The utility provider condemned the incident, stressing that the destruction and theft of electrical infrastructure directly disrupt recovery operations and extend outage periods for affected customers.

JPS is calling on residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity involving power equipment. The company is also encouraging anyone with information about the incident to contact the nearest police station and file a report.
