The Supreme Court is set to determine whether former Western St Mary Member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera will be convicted of manslaughter in connection with the death of his wife, Melissa Silvera, following his acceptance of a plea deal.
Proceedings continued in the Gun Court on Tuesday, where both prosecutors and defence attorneys presented their submissions after the prosecution accepted Silvera’s guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Silvera had originally been charged in January 2024 with murder, manslaughter, and using a firearm to commit a felony. He initially entered a not guilty plea but changed his position on Monday, just as his trial was scheduled to begin.
Under Jamaican law, a murder conviction carries a sentence ranging from 50 years to life imprisonment. Manslaughter also carries a potential life sentence, although court rulings in such cases typically result in shorter terms, often not exceeding 20 years.
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes is expected to deliver the court’s decision on Thursday.
