A 33-year-old man died following a reported exchange of gunfire with police officers during an early-morning operation along Gordon Town Road in St Andrew on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Doshane Alphonso Mitchell, also known by the aliases “Puku” and “Millions.”
Police reports indicate that between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., officers carried out an intelligence-driven operation in the Highlight View community at 31 Gordon Town Road. During the exercise, a team was clearing a location when they received information about an armed individual at a nearby premises.
Law enforcement officers say that as they approached the location, a man emerged from a doorway. The officers identified themselves, after which the individual allegedly pointed a firearm at the team and opened fire. The police returned fire while taking cover. The man reportedly retreated into the building, where he was later found injured and in possession of a firearm.
Mitchell was transported by police to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities reported that a Glock 19 9mm pistol fitted with a magazine containing three rounds was recovered at the scene.
According to police sources, Mitchell had prior arrests and charges, including murder, robbery with aggravation, and possession of an offensive weapon in the Kingston Eastern Division. He is also reported to have connections to multiple criminal groups operating in several St Andrew and Kingston communities, including Fifth Street in Greenwich Town, the 110 gang in the McIntyre Villa/Dunkirk area, and the Mad and Mean gang based in Highlight View.
Investigators further stated that five other men believed to be linked to the Mad and Mean gang were detained during the operation. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
