Health officials in Portland are calling for increased vigilance and stronger rodent control measures following a rise in suspected leptospirosis cases.
Medical Officer of Health, Dr Sharon Lewis, reported that four suspected cases were recorded between January and February. While test results are pending, she noted that similar tests conducted recently returned negative PCR results.
Despite this, Dr Lewis warned against complacency, citing rodents as a major risk due to their rapid breeding. She stressed the importance of regular baiting and proper waste management to limit infestation.
Several food establishments have also faced enforcement action in recent months due to rodent issues and sanitation breaches, with operators required to make corrections before reopening.
Dr Lewis is urging government agencies and stakeholders to work together to maintain cleaner environments and reduce public health risks.
