The multimillion-dollar fraud trial involving former Education Minister Ruel Reid and four co-accused continued on Monday despite the absence of defence attorney Hugh Wildman.
The prosecution’s third witness took the stand, and 11 documents were tendered into evidence, including Reid’s Oath of Allegiance and instrument of appointment.
Presiding Parish Court Judge Sanchia Burrell said an email from Wildman indicating that he had two other court fixtures did not constitute an application for an adjournment.
Burrell noted that the parties had been advised since July 1 that the trial would proceed. She cited the case’s age, complexity and history in explaining the decision to continue.
Reid is before the court alongside his wife, Sharen; daughter, Sharelle; JLP Councillor Kim Brown Lawrence; and former Caribbean Maritime University President Professor Fritz Pinnock.
The trial is scheduled to resume on Wednesday
