A 37-year-old taxi operator is scheduled to appear before the court on Thursday after being charged in connection with the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Clarendon earlier this month.
The accused has been identified as Damion Beckford, a resident of Canaan Heights on the outskirts of May Pen. He was charged on Monday.
According to the Clarendon police, the incident occurred on September 8 while the primary school student was on her way to school.
Police reported that the child got out of a taxi at the entrance to the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme when a man, believed by investigators to be Beckford, allegedly persuaded her to enter his vehicle.
The child was reportedly driven to a neighbouring community, where police allege she was sexually assaulted in a bushy area.
She was later released near her school, where members of staff were alerted to what had reportedly happened.
The child was subsequently taken to hospital for medical attention.
Beckford is expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday in relation to the case.
