NEW YORK, United States — A Jamaican man who worked as a tailor and disc jockey in Montego Bay before migrating to the United States was killed after a massive tree fell on him while he was working at a housing complex in Brooklyn on Saturday.
The victim, 56-year-old Leighton Brown, was a maintenance supervisor with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

Brown, who had ties to Montego Bay, St James, worked as a tailor at Paradise Rowe before establishing himself in the entertainment scene.
He later worked as a disc jockey at Margaritaville in Montego Bay before migrating to the United States more than 16 years ago.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Cypress Hills Houses in East New York, Brooklyn, near 700 Euclid Avenue.
Brown was reportedly working an extra shift when part of a large tree came crashing down and struck him in a parking lot.
Emergency personnel performed CPR before he was transported to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Brown had reportedly recently received a promotion and was preparing for his final week working at the Cypress Hills complex before moving into his new position.
The tragedy occurred as a powerful nor’easter brought strong winds and toppled trees across parts of New York City. However, authorities had not established whether the weather directly caused the tree that struck Brown to fall.
NYCHA confirmed Brown was an employee and extended condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
His death has also brought sadness to those who knew him from his years in Montego Bay, where he was involved in both the tailoring and entertainment industries before migrating.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remain under investigation.
