FLORIDA, United States — A 25-year-old Jamaican woman has been arrested and charged in Florida after allegedly defrauding a 74-year-old woman of US$8,000.
Amoye Jameison faces charges of organised scheme to defraud and grand theft. She is being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the elderly victim was contacted by someone posing as a representative of her bank and instructed to withdraw US$8,000 for collection by a courier.
After realising she had been scammed, the woman contacted law enforcement and provided officers with the courier’s vehicle tag number.
Police were able to trace the drop-off location, while surveillance footage reportedly captured the courier handing the package to Jameison.
Law enforcement officers subsequently recovered the full US$8,000 on Thursday night and returned the money to the victim.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was also contacted, as Jameison is reportedly in the United States on an expired visa.
