A police operation in Old Harbour, St Catherine, ended Tuesday evening with the death of a 27-year-old man following an alleged exchange of gunfire and the reported recovery of two firearms.
The deceased has been identified by police as Shane Clarke, otherwise called “Giant”, of Berrydale, Porus, Manchester.
The incident unfolded about 6:45 p.m. along Bowers Drive in the Colbeck area.
According to the police, officers received information that men travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz GLE were allegedly heading to Kingston to collect firearms before making their way to Old Harbour.
Police said the vehicle was later spotted along Bowers Drive and the occupant was signalled to stop. Instead, the man allegedly opened fire at the officers and sped away.
A pursuit followed, and the vehicle reportedly stopped a short distance away. Police alleged that when members of the team exited their service vehicle and approached the Mercedes-Benz, they were again fired upon.
The officers returned fire, reportedly in self-defence, after which the driver sped away once more before crashing into an embankment. The vehicle overturned.
Clarke was subsequently taken by police to the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators reportedly recovered two firearms from the scene — a black-and-silver .380 pistol with a magazine containing one round and a black AK-47 rifle fitted with an empty magazine. Police said the serial numbers on both weapons were not visible.
No police officer was reported injured during the incident.
Police sources have described Clarke as a major criminal suspect and linked him to several serious crimes, including robberies targeting Beryllium security teams.
The scene was processed by investigators as the probe into the fatal shooting continues.
