David Smith has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the kidnapping and murder of 27-year-old Toshyna Patterson and her 10-month-old daughter, Sarayah Paulwell.
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes handed down the sentence in the Supreme Court on Friday. Smith must serve 45 years before becoming eligible for parole.
The 35-year-old painter and father of two, from Mountain View in Kingston, pleaded guilty on June 10 to two counts of murder and two counts of kidnapping.
Patterson and her infant daughter were abducted and murdered on September 9, 2023.
In March 2024, then Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewelyn served Smith with notice of the prosecution’s intention to seek the death penalty. He was represented by attorneys Franklin Grenyion and Shamar Hanson.
Two other men charged in the case, Richard Brown and Roshane Miller, previously pleaded guilty and were sentenced.
Meanwhile, proceedings remain ongoing against Leoda Bradshaw, the alleged mastermind behind the killings, and her co-accused, Bjorn Black and Roland Balfour.
The three are scheduled to return to court on February 8, 2027, for a trial-readiness hearing, ahead of a trial set to begin on February 22, 2027.
All three remain in custody.
