KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government of Jamaica will require operators on platforms such as Airbnb to charge General Consumption Tax (GCT) starting April 1, 2027.
The move brings short-term rentals in line with hotels, with tourism services expected to attract a 15% GCT rate, up from the current 10% in some cases. Officials say the policy is designed to create fairness in the hospitality sector and capture revenue from a rapidly growing segment of the tourism market.
Short-term rentals have expanded significantly in recent years, now accounting for a notable share of visitor accommodations across the island.
Hosts will be required to register, collect, and remit GCT, while guests can expect slightly higher booking costs once the measure takes effect.
The government says the lead time before implementation will allow operators to prepare for the changes.
