A late-night sitting of the House of Representatives of Jamaica was disrupted Tuesday after an incident involving the parliamentary mace led to the suspension of Opposition MP Angela Brown-Burke.
Speaker Juliet Holness ordered Brown-Burke removed for “disorderly conduct,” stressing that interference with the mace—an important symbol of parliamentary authority—is not permitted under any circumstances. Government members supported the motion for her suspension.
The incident forced a pause in proceedings as lawmakers debated the NaRRA Bill. Leader of Government Business Floyd Green later tabled the motion in the full House.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness described the episode as regrettable, underscoring the need to uphold order and dignity in Parliament.
Brown-Burke did not return when the session resumed.
