42 Haitian Migrants Accounted for After Illegal Landing in Portland

PORTLAND, Jamaica — Forty-two Haitian nationals who arrived in Jamaica illegally by boat on Sunday have all been accounted for, police have confirmed.

The group — made up of 29 men, seven women (including one in advanced pregnancy), four boys, and two girls — arrived at Ross Craig in Long Bay, Portland, aboard a 25-foot makeshift canoe with no engine. Upon arrival, they were seen along the roadway and beach in the area before being detained by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

Authorities say the pregnant woman was taken to a maternity ward for medical attention, while the rest of the group was transported to the Port Antonio Hospital, where they were processed by immigration and health officials.

According to police sources, the vessel the migrants used was later set ablaze, a common occurrence intended to prevent re-use or salvage.

It is suspected that the group may depart the island as early as Monday, though no official confirmation has been given regarding repatriation plans.

The arrival marks the latest in a growing number of illegal landings along Jamaica’s northeastern coastline, particularly in Portland, which has become a hotspot for Haitian migration. The increase comes amid escalating political instability and gang violence in Haiti, driving many to flee the country in search of safety and better opportunities.

Jamaican authorities, along with international partners, continue to monitor the situation as regional governments grapple with the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Haiti.
