A police operation in Spanish Town, St Catherine, ended in a fatal shooting early Sunday after a man reportedly confronted officers with a firearm.
The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Okeffe Somers, also known as “Briss,” a labourer from March Pen Road in the parish.
According to police reports, at approximately 12:45 a.m., officers conducting routine patrols received intelligence about armed individuals at a location along Jobs Lane. A team was dispatched to the premises to investigate the report.
Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel entered the property, during which one individual reportedly fled the scene. While conducting a search of the house, Somers allegedly appeared from beneath a bed and pointed a gun at the officers.
Police say they responded by taking evasive action and opening fire. Following the exchange, Somers was found holding what authorities described as a .357 Magnum revolver containing five rounds of ammunition.
He was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The incident is now under investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which routinely probes fatal encounters involving security forces.
