Winston Jones High School in Prattville, Manchester, is slated for repairs to sections of its buildings damaged by Hurricane Melissa last October.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Marlon Morgan, announced the planned works during the school’s commencement exercise and 50th anniversary celebrations on Wednesday, October 7.
Morgan said the Ministry remains committed to addressing students’ concerns, recognising the sacrifices many families make to access education, particularly those from lower-income households and communities far from the school.
He also said the national rural school bus service would be expanded over time to reach more students, including those attending Winston Jones High. Newly manufactured buses are expected to join the fleet as the Government works to ease transportation costs for parents.
The Parliamentary Secretary highlighted ongoing efforts to improve Internet access at rural schools through telecommunications providers and Starlink satellite services. He said reliable broadband helps students conduct research and access educational opportunities comparable to those available elsewhere in Jamaica.
Morgan also urged students to reject violence, develop strong interpersonal skills and conduct themselves in ways that bring pride to their families, school and community.
He cautioned against involvement in fights and other misconduct that could attract attention on social media, encouraging students to make responsible choices.
Member of Parliament for Manchester Southern, Peter Bunting, also addressed the gathering, encouraging students to pursue their ambitions and reminding them that their present circumstances do not determine their future.
