Montego Bay and wider western Jamaica are mourning the death of veteran sportsman, coach and administrator Jeremiah “Jerry” Reid, who died at Cornwall Regional Hospital last night following a prolonged illness.
Reid, one of western Jamaica’s most respected sporting figures, enjoyed a remarkable career spanning cricket, football, track and field, tennis, volleyball and swimming.
He represented St James, Manchester and Jamaica in cricket, St James and Manchester in football, and St James in athletics and swimming. Even into his mid-50s, Reid remained active in club cricket in St James.
His achievements extended well into his later years. In his mid-60s, he represented Jamaica in track and field at the Senior Caribbean Athletics Championship.
As he moved away from active competition, Reid turned to coaching, sharing his expertise in football, cricket and tennis. He made history in 1990 when he guided Jamaica’s Under-19 cricket team to its first West Indies Under-19 title.
Reid also served as a football referee and later became deeply involved in sports administration. He spent years as vice-president of the St James Football Association, the St James Cricket Association and the Montego Bay Cricket Club, where he was a life member.
Beyond his achievements on the field and in administration, Reid was highly regarded as a mentor. He played an influential role in the development of many footballers, cricketers, tennis players and swimmers who went on to emerge from Montego Bay and western Jamaica.
His passing marks the loss of a towering figure whose contribution to Jamaican sport spanned generations.
