Trinidad Promoter Sues Vybz Kartel Over Cancelled Music Festival Appearance

A Trinidad and Tobago-based entertainment promoter has taken legal action against Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel following the cancellation of his scheduled appearance at the One Caribbean Music Festival last year.

Reports from the twin-island republic indicate that Jacho Entertainment Limited filed a civil claim in the High Court of Justice last Tuesday, accusing the entertainer of breaching a performance agreement. The lawsuit also includes claims of unjust enrichment and defamation, among other allegations, according to CNC3 News.

The company is seeking damages exceeding TT$7.3 million, along with the recovery of approximately US$1.1 million it claims was already paid to the artiste, whose given name is Adidja Palmer.

Court filings reportedly state that Jacho Entertainment entered into a written contract with Kartel on November 22, 2024, for him to headline the festival. The event was initially slated for February 28, 2025, but was later postponed to May 31. Under the agreement, Kartel was to receive a total fee of US$1.35 million, payable in four instalments.

According to the promoter, about 81 per cent of the contracted sum had been paid by May 29, 2025, leaving a balance of US$250,000. The company said it planned to clear the outstanding amount upon Kartel’s arrival in Trinidad, noting that while temporary foreign exchange challenges delayed the transfer, the funds were available on the day of the show.

Jacho Entertainment further alleged that Kartel did not board his scheduled flight and insisted on full payment before travelling, a condition it claims was not outlined in the contract. The artiste later announced the cancellation of his performance on social media, which the promoter said was done without the formal written notice required under the agreement.

The company maintains that the cancellation resulted in significant financial losses, including ticket refunds and additional expenses, as well as reputational harm. It also claims that public statements made by Kartel accusing the promoter of mismanagement worsened the damage.

According to CNC3 News, Jacho Entertainment said the lawsuit was filed after several months of failed attempts to resolve the matter amicably. The promoter is seeking repayment of all monies paid, special and general damages, an injunction to prevent further alleged defamatory statements, as well as interest and legal costs.
