George Dempster, a taxi operator accused of involvement in an attack on his brother-in-law and the theft of his vehicle, was granted $250,000 bail with two sureties on Tuesday.
Dempster appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on charges of assault at common law, robbery with aggravation and malicious destruction of property.
The court heard allegations that Dempster visited the complainant’s home and complained that his mother treated the complainant better than she treated him. The complainant reportedly responded that she did so because he treated her well.
The following day, while the complainant was heading to a gas station, Dempster allegedly used his car to block his path.
Dempster reportedly exited with two other men, who allegedly pulled the complainant from his vehicle and physically assaulted him.
The complainant reportedly escaped and ran away. On returning, he allegedly saw one of the men driving off in his car. The vehicle was later found at Dempster’s gate.
As a condition of bail, Dempster was ordered to have no contact with the complainant. The court also made a restorative justice order.
He is scheduled to return to court on January 26, 2027
