Trelawny, Jamaica: Tensions flared in Salt Marsh, Trelawny on Monday morning as residents took to the streets in protest over the continued lack of piped water following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Despite light rainfall, demonstrators blocked a main roadway using large stones and an abandoned vehicle, disrupting traffic through the area. The action affected commuters traveling to Falmouth and Montego Bay, including students and workers from surrounding communities such as Davis Pen and Johnson Hill in Trelawny, along with Goodwill, Chatham, and Adelphi in St James.
Residents say several sections along the roadway, including areas near Salt Marsh Primary School and parts of Davis Pen, have been without a reliable water supply since the hurricane impacted the island.
Frustration has grown among community members who report being forced to purchase water from private truck services while still receiving bills from the National Water Commission.
Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force were deployed to the location to monitor the situation as the protest unfolded.
