A 13-year-old boy from Rio Bueno, Trelawny, is battling life-threatening injuries following a reported shooting involving a police officer on Sunday night.
The injured student, who attends Cedric Titus High School, was reportedly on the roof of a bar located next to his home when a uniformed policeman inside the establishment discharged a firearm, hitting the child. The incident has sparked concern among relatives, who insist the shooting was unjustified.
According to a family member, the teen managed to run to his mother immediately after being shot, informing her of his injury. He sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and remains in critical condition.
Medical personnel have since indicated that the boy suffered severe damage to both his kidney and intestines. Up to Monday evening, relatives issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, stating that approximately 16 units were required as doctors worked to stabilise him.
The officer involved reportedly claimed that he saw a firearm prior to opening fire. However, the boy’s aunt has strongly rejected that account, suggesting it was an attempt to justify the use of lethal force.
Family members also allege that responding investigators confiscated the mobile phones of both the teenager and his mother, though no reason was provided for the action.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the shooting. In a brief statement, the agency said its team visited the location following reports of a shooting incident in the area.
Efforts to reach the commanding officer for the Trelawny Police Division, Superintendent Velonique Campbell, for comment were unsuccessful.
