ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Law enforcement officials have confirmed the identity of the man who died following an alleged confrontation with police in Hodges, near Black River, on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Leighton Nembhard, also known as “Bigga Don.” Police said Nembhard was a sound selector and a resident of Peacock Heights in the Black River area.
According to police reports, the incident occurred during the mid-afternoon hours when Nembhard reportedly became involved in a confrontation with members of the security forces. Investigators said additional personnel from across the St Elizabeth Police Division were called in to assist during what was described as a standoff.
Following the incident, police reported the seizure of a Browning 9-millimetre pistol. The firearm was found with a magazine containing two rounds of ammunition.
Authorities noted that Nembhard’s death brings the number of people killed during alleged confrontations with security forces to 14 so far this year. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
