St. Catherine, Jamaica – The usually quiet Linstead Bypass was transformed into a war zone late Tuesday night when a blazing gunfight erupted between police and heavily armed gunmen, leaving three men dead and two lawmen nursing gunshot wounds.
Reports reaching Mckoy’s News are that around 10:30 p.m., members of a specialized police team intercepted a white Toyota Axio with five men aboard. However, instead of complying with the order to stop, the men allegedly opened fire on the police, igniting a fierce and prolonged shootout that shattered the stillness of the night.
When the smoke cleared, three of the gunmen were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Two members of the police force were also injured in the exchange — one treated and released, while the other remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Police say two of the gunmen managed to escape into nearby bushes, reportedly still firing as they fled. A massive manhunt has since been launched to capture them.
Investigators on the scene recovered two firearms, believed to have been used in the attack.
Sources tell Mckoy’s News that the deadly confrontation was part of an intelligence-driven operation targeting a notorious criminal network believed to be behind a string of robberies and shootings in St. Catherine and surrounding parishes.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified and has launched a probe into the deadly encounter.
Residents in the area reported hearing heavy gunfire echoing through the night, describing the ordeal as something “straight out of a movie.”
“It was pure rapid fire! Like dem deh pon di battlefield,” one resident told Mckoy’s News.
Police continue to urge the two fugitives to turn themselves in immediately, warning that the net is closing in.
