St Ann, Jamaica – A man was shot and killed in Watt Town, St Ann, shortly after midnight on Wednesday following a confrontation with an off-duty police constable.
The deceased has been identified as Oneil Watson of Harris Town in the Watt Town community.
According to police reports, a constable assigned to a station in St James travelled to the area, located roughly 10 miles south of Brown’s Town, to visit a friend in a section known as Bump. The officer, who was off duty at the time, was reportedly armed with his service pistol.
Police say that around 12:30 a.m., as the constable prepared to leave and sat inside his vehicle, Watson approached, opened the driver’s door, and attempted to pull him from the car. During the struggle, the officer fell to the ground. Investigators report that Watson accused the constable of being on his “turf” and allegedly lifted a large stone while threatening to kill him.
The constable discharged two rounds, hitting Watson. He was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Residents in the community have challenged the police’s account of the incident. Some allege that Watson had been involved in a relationship with the woman the officer was visiting and claim the scene was disturbed before investigators arrived.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified, and enquiries into the fatal shooting are ongoing.
