ST. ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A man remains missing after his vehicle plunged into the Black River off the Lacovia Bridge on Friday, as emergency crews continue their search.
Councillor Christopher Williams (Jamaica Labour Party, Santa Cruz division) told Observer Online that the vehicle was traveling along the Lacovia main road around 1:00 p.m. when the driver reportedly lost control at the bridge, sending the car into the river.
Williams said the man’s stepson managed to escape by swimming from the vehicle before it sank. “He sustained serious injuries to his eyes and ears. He tried to release the seatbelt but couldn’t, so he had to save himself,” the councillor explained.
Officials noted that the bridge’s rails have been in disrepair for years and suffered additional damage during Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
Divers, police, and the fire brigade are at the scene conducting the search for the submerged vehicle.
