Veteran Jamaican singer, songwriter and record producer Derrick Harriott has died at age 87.
Harriott reportedly passed away at his home early Saturday morning following a period of illness.
Born in Kingston in 1939, he helped shape Jamaica’s ska, rocksteady and reggae sounds through his work as both a performer and producer.
His career began with The Jiving Juniors in the late 1950s. He later pursued a solo career and established his Crystal record label in 1962.
Known for songs such as The Loser, Harriott also produced recordings for several prominent Jamaican artistes, including Dennis Brown, Big Youth and The Ethiopians.
His contributions to Jamaican music earned him the Order of Distinction in 2009 and the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
