BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — A man has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison for the 2017 killing of the cousin of international music star Rihanna, bringing a long-running and high-profile case to a close.
Shawayne Deshawn Williams received a sentence of 38 years and 138 days after being convicted of the murder of Tavon Alleyne, who was shot and killed on December 26, 2017, in the St. Michael area of Barbados.
Alleyne, 21 at the time of his death, was walking near his home when he was fatally shot. The killing drew widespread attention both locally and internationally due to his family connection to Rihanna, who had publicly mourned his death and called for an end to gun violence.
The case was heard in the High Court of Barbados, where a jury found Williams guilty earlier this year. During sentencing, the presiding judge stressed the seriousness of gun-related crimes and the need for strong penalties to deter violence and protect the public.
Prosecutors argued that the attack was deliberate, while the defense maintained Williams’ innocence throughout the trial. Despite those claims, the court concluded that the evidence supported a conviction.
The sentence marks a significant moment for the victim’s family and for Barbados, where concerns about violent crime and illegal firearms have remained prominent in public discourse.
