KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jahazeil Myrie, son of reggae entertainer Buju Banton, has publicly shared details about his spiritual journey, stating that his faith in God helped him navigate what he described as struggles with his sexuality.
Myrie made the revelation during an appearance on the faith-based podcast Sheena Power Talk, hosted by Sheena Lyn Hanson. In the interview, he reflected on a challenging period in his life, explaining that emotional pain and rejection contributed to internal confusion.
He said that hearing his father’s controversial 1992 track Boom Bye Bye sparked reflection and prompted him to return to church. The song, recorded by Buju Banton as a teenager, has faced longstanding criticism for its anti-gay lyrics. The artiste stopped performing it in 2007 and removed it from streaming platforms in 2019, issuing a public apology.
Myrie described his experience as a spiritual battle rather than a physical one, adding that his 2024 baptism marked a turning point. He emphasized the importance of personal growth and what he called “inner work” in strengthening his relationship with God.
Since then, Myrie has openly discussed his Christian faith, crediting divine guidance for helping him through personal and professional challenges.
