Dancehall entertainer Squash, born Andrae Maurice Whittaker, has been sentenced to 27 months in a United States federal prison after pleading guilty to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm.
The ruling was handed down by Judge Roy Altman, who also ordered that Squash serve three years of probation upon release and pay a US$100 fine.
Prosecutor Jacob Koffsky had pushed for a sentence closer to the maximum 30 months, presenting five videos reportedly retrieved from Squash’s phone. The clips allegedly show the artiste holding and firing several weapons, including the pink modified Glock pistol tied to his February arrest, according to Nationwide News.
Squash’s lawyer, Samuel Rabin, argued for a sentence of less than two years, citing mitigating factors. However, following a brief 30-minute hearing, Judge Altman ordered the entertainer remanded to the custody of US Marshals to begin serving his sentence.
Meanwhile, there is still no indication that Squash’s father has been released from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Court documents filed by Rabin indicate that the elder Whittaker, publicly identified as Aaron Whittaker, was detained on September 5 in the lobby of the C. Clyde Atkins United States Courthouse.
The operation reportedly involved both ICE officers and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
