Hurricane Simon has intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm as it heads towards Mexico’s coast, threatening dangerous flooding and mudslides.
The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami said early Saturday that the hurricane’s maximum sustained winds had reached 150 miles per hour.
Simon is expected to make landfall early Sunday, although tropical storm-force winds could reach the coast well before then. Residents were urged to take immediate steps to prepare.
The NHC forecast rainfall totals of 10 to 20 inches across parts of southwestern Mexico, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 30 inches.
Forecasters warned that the heavy rainfall could trigger life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas.
