Kenise Dunn death investigation

Hospital Probes Death Of Woman Five Days After Giving Birth

ST ANN, Jamaica — Administrators at St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital have launched an investigation into the death of 33-year-old Kenise “Punky” Dunn, who died five days after giving birth at the facility.

Dunn died on Friday, August 14, following what her family described as a prolonged period of illness and uncertainty during her hospital stay.

Her uncle, Kirk Hall, is demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding her death, alleging that Dunn experienced severe abdominal pain after being admitted to the hospital on July 29.

Hall said Dunn had complained of intense stomach pain and constipation before she was admitted. According to him, she later told him that doctors were repeatedly taking blood samples but that she was not receiving clear answers about what was causing her pain.

He also claimed that Dunn was scheduled for an ultrasound at another facility but that the procedure was delayed because of staffing shortages and problems with an ambulance.

The family was later informed that Dunn had given birth and subsequently required emergency surgery. Hall said doctors told relatives that the surgery revealed a ruptured bowel, a large amount of stool in her body and a tumour in her colon that was believed to be cancerous.

Dunn was reportedly placed on life support on August 9 but never recovered.

Her family is now questioning whether her condition was diagnosed and treated promptly, whether the tumour was confirmed to be malignant, and why relatives were allegedly not informed about the results of her tests and scans.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dennis Morgan confirmed that an internal investigation is underway but said the facility is unable to comment on the specifics while the probe continues.

Morgan said the investigation is necessary to establish and confirm the facts so that the family can receive accurate answers. He also pointed to patient confidentiality laws, noting that medical information cannot legally be disclosed to relatives who are not listed as the patient’s next of kin.

Meanwhile, Hall said the family has requested answers and is awaiting the outcome of the investigation.

The circumstances surrounding Dunn’s death remain under investigation.
