St Andrew – People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding last night conceded defeat and offered congratulations to the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in a brief, sober address at the party’s Old Hope Road headquarters.
By the time Golding took the stage just before 11:00 p.m., only a handful of Comrades remained, their mood somber after a long night of counting.
“I acknowledge and concede the results and congratulate the Jamaica Labour Party. Jamaica’s democracy is important and we must cherish it, though it sometimes brings bitter disappointment,” Golding said, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of electoral defeat.
Despite the loss, Golding praised the peaceful conduct of Wednesday’s election, calling it a “wonderful demonstration of Jamaica’s political process” without any violence.
He also highlighted the PNP’s progressive campaign platform, citing plans to tackle land tenure issues, lower taxes for struggling families, beach reform, and social justice initiatives.
“Those hundreds of thousands of Jamaicans who voted for us and gave us 29 seats – we don’t take that for granted,” Golding said, urging reflection on the painfully slow voting process, which he said needs urgent attention.
Golding was joined onstage by General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell and newly elected Kingston Central MP Steve McGregor, who narrowly defeated JLP’s Donovan Williams.
