Kingston, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – In just one month since the launch of the Electronic Motor Vehicle Registration Certificate (eMVRC), Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) says more than 65,000 certificates have been issued, marking a major shift in how Jamaicans register their vehicles.
The eMVRC, which officially replaced the traditional paper-based certificate and decal system on July 21, is already seeing strong national adoption, with TAJ confirming that over 10 per cent of the transactions were completed online.
Motorists Embracing Change
The new digital certificate allows private motor vehicle owners to complete their registration renewal in under five minutes using a credit card. This is done through the Certificate Generation and Distribution System, available on the eMVRC Hub on TAJ’s website at
Commissioner General Ainsley Powell praised the progress, saying:
“It can be difficult to accept change, especially change of this magnitude, but the numbers show that as a people, we are open to improvement in revenue services. I’m especially impressed that 74 per cent of users in a recent survey reported a seamless process.”
In-Office Requirement for Commercial and Special Vehicles
While private vehicle owners can complete the process online, public passenger, commercial, diplomatic, and newly registered vehicles are still required to visit a Tax Office to complete their registration. However, they too are now being issued digital certificates, replacing the old paper format.
Two-Year Validity Option Gaining Traction
TAJ also revealed that over 3,200 motorists have opted into the new two-year registration validity—a feature that is currently being used by 5 per cent of all registrants.
This update is part of TAJ’s broader push to modernize and streamline its services, reduce in-office wait times, and improve convenience for the Jamaican public.
