Clarendon, Jamaica – Police investigators are probing the mysterious circumstances under which a 62-year-old man was shot dead at his upscale Glencoe, Spalding residence on Thursday night.
The deceased has been identified as Dean Melville, an architect of Mimosa Drive, Glencoe.
Reports are that sometime after 9:00 p.m., Melville was at home with his family when a loud explosion was heard. He was later found suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.
According to the police, Melville’s wife gave a statement indicating that her husband had been asleep when she noticed his licensed firearm placed on the nightstand where he usually kept his phone. She reportedly attempted to move the weapon, at which point Melville awoke, grabbed the gun, and it discharged — hitting him in the neck.
The injured man was rushed to the Percy Junior Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives from the Spalding Police say the case is being treated as a homicide until further investigations are completed. The weapon has since been seized, and both an autopsy and ballistic examination are pending to determine whether the shooting was accidental.
