KINGSTON , Jamaica — The Government of Jamaica has welcomed the arrival of the USS Nimitz to Kingston Harbour, marking a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between Jamaica and the United States.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, one of the most recognizable vessels in the U.S. Navy fleet, arrived in Kingston on Sunday as part of its Southern Seas 2026 deployment. The visit is particularly noteworthy as it is expected to be the ship’s final overseas port call before its scheduled retirement from active service.
Government officials highlighted the importance of the visit, describing it as a reflection of the strong diplomatic, security, and economic ties shared by both countries. The stop is also expected to strengthen cooperation in areas such as maritime security, disaster preparedness, and regional stability.
The USS Nimitz is accompanied by members of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group and carries thousands of sailors and aircrew. During its stay, the vessel is expected to host engagements involving government representatives, security personnel, and other stakeholders.
The visit forms part of broader efforts to enhance partnerships throughout the Caribbean and Latin America under the Southern Seas 2026 mission.
As one of the largest warships ever built, the USS Nimitz has served the United States Navy for decades and has participated in numerous operations around the world. Its arrival in Kingston Harbour has generated considerable public interest due to its size, history, and significance.
The vessel is scheduled to remain in Jamaica until June 5 before continuing preparations for the conclusion of its distinguished service career
