Eight people were killed in a shooting at a Pennsylvania home Friday, with the suspected gunman also found dead, bringing the total death toll to nine, police said.
Officers responded around 5 p.m. to reports of gunfire at a residence on Perry Street in Erie. Two women were found dead outside. The gunman reportedly entered the home and opened fire before barricading himself inside, prompting a standoff involving tactical officers. Children were among those killed.
Authorities said the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. The victims had not been publicly identified, and investigators had not established a motive.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the loss of life as unprecedented in his nearly three decades of service. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday that he had offered his administration’s support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin.
