Small businesses and self-employed Jamaicans affected by Hurricane Melissa can access recovery assistance through a new $500 million Restoration Grant Programme.
The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce launched the initiative on Tuesday, October 6, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston.
Portfolio Minister Senator Aubyn Hill said assistance will be provided through two grants: Tools of Trade and Fasst Biz.
The Tools of Trade Grant offers eligible self-employed people up to $100,000 to replace tools, equipment or stock damaged or lost during the hurricane.
Eligible trades and services include mechanics, carpenters, masons, tailors, hairdressers, barbers, gardeners, beauty therapists and cookshop operators.
The Fasst Biz Grant will provide eligible micro and small businesses with up to $350,000 to help restore premises, tools and equipment. Hill said the grant targets businesses with up to 20 employees and an annual turnover of $75 million, with assistance depending on business size and sector.
Presenting the programme overview, Dr Cliff Riley, director general of the Hazardous Substances Regulatory Authority, said the initiative aims to support recovery and strengthen resilience across multiple sectors.
He reported that assessments conducted mainly during the latter part of 2025 found extensive damage among MSMEs in the seven major affected parishes, with recovery costs ranging from $500,000 to more than $10 million.
Applications can be submitted online, at Rural Agricultural Development Authority offices, at Jamaica Business Development Corporation regional offices in Manchester, Montego Bay and Savanna-la-Mar, or at an MIIC Application Drive.
