Deaf Teen Gunned Down in Kingston, Mother Left Heartbroken

Kingston, Jamaica (Mckoy’s News) — Pain and disbelief now hang heavy over Text Lane in Central Kingston after 17-year-old J-Adore Campbell, who was both hearing and speech impaired, lost his life days after being cut down in a hail of bullets.

The teen, affectionately called cha cha boy by his mother, was one of six people shot when gunmen invaded their community last Monday night.

According to residents, a white motor car rolled onto Text Lane and turned onto Charles Street before four gunmen jumped out and started firing wildly.

Screams and chaos filled the night air as people ran for cover. When the smoke cleared, several were left nursing gunshot wounds — and J-Adore, the quiet, ever-smiling boy who everyone loved, was among them.

He fought for his life but passed away on Saturday, leaving his mother, Narlene Smith, shattered and struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Smith said she received the call no parent ever wants — to come identify her son’s body. But she couldn’t do it. The thought alone broke her down. Not even when her mother died did she have the strength to face death so directly — and now it’s her child.

The bullet-riddled walls around Text Lane now stand as cold reminders of that nightmare — holes that look like scars, refusing to fade. Smith says each one tells the story of a community still in shock and a mother still asking “Why?”

She said the entire family could have been killed that night. They were all outside together because of a power outage, cooling off in the darkness. She had only stepped away with her baby girl when the gunfire started. If she had remained seated, she believes she might have been hit too.

J-Adore attended the Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf and was loved by everyone who knew him. Despite his disabilities, he moved around independently and was known for his big, bright smile. He was still wearing diapers, but that never stopped him from doing what he could for himself.

His mother described him as a cheerful boy who loved food and was always neatly dressed. She said she made sure he never lacked anything.

Now, as she prepares to lay him to rest, Smith says the pain is almost too much to bear. Her only comfort is her one-year-old daughter, who reminds her of the love she still has left.

Smith also had strong words for those spreading misinformation about the tragedy. She said people are quick to talk, claiming children should not be on the road late at night. But according to her, it was not late — the family was outside in their own yard when the gunmen struck.

J-Adore Campbell’s life was short, but his memory burns bright. A smiling boy who couldn’t speak now speaks the loudest — through the grief of a mother who will never stop loving him.
