KINGSTON, Jamaicac — Police seized cocaine valued at more than J$1 billion during operations at Kingston’s port and Sangster International Airport on October 16 and 17, taking a British national into custody.
The Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) conducted the operations with support from the Jamaica Customs Agency and international partners.
At Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited, investigators intercepted two containers that arrived from Honduras on October 12 and were scheduled to continue to Belgium.
A search of the first container on October 16 uncovered 25 knitted bags holding 661 kilogrammes of cocaine, with an estimated street value of J$462.7 million.
The following morning, investigators searched a second container from the same vessel and found another 28 knitted bags containing 789 kilogrammes of cocaine, valued at approximately J$552.3 million.
In a separate operation later on October 17, investigators at Sangster International Airport detected irregularities in the luggage of a British man preparing to board a flight to London.
A search reportedly revealed 14.5 pounds of cocaine hidden inside food packages, as well as four plastic bottles containing liquid cocaine. That seizure was valued at approximately J$4.5 million.
The man was arrested, but his identity has been withheld as investigations continue.
Acting FNID Director, Deputy Superintendent of Police Oreth Dunkley, described the seizures as a setback for drug-trafficking networks. He said the illegal drug trade fuels organised crime and violence in Jamaican communities.
Dunkley reaffirmed the division’s commitment to working with local and overseas agencies to intercept illicit shipments and apprehend those involved.
