CLARENDON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has called for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to strengthen its capacity to intervene in domestic disputes, particularly those linked to mental health issues.
His comments follow last Thursday’s triple murder of members of the same family in Rocky Point, Clarendon.
Dr. Holness said violent interpersonal conflicts are now the leading cause of murders in Jamaica, noting that gang-related killings have been trending downward.
The triple killing occurred at a house in Frazersfield, Clarendon, where it is reported that the suspect became involved in a dispute with his mother, brother and cousin. The man allegedly used a machete to fatally chop all three relatives.
The prime minister stressed that the police will need to take a more proactive approach in responding to and managing domestic disputes before they escalate into deadly violence.
Dr. Holness made the comments while speaking with members of the Clarendon Police Division during a recent visit to Rock River, Clarendon.
