Veteran Jamaican broadcaster Walter Charles “Bob” Clarke has died, sparking an outpouring of tributes across the local media and entertainment community.
Clarke, 75, passed away early Tuesday at the Port Maria Hospital in St. Mary, where he had been admitted for treatment of a medical condition, media reports confirm.
A respected voice for more than five decades, Clarke was a founding member of IRIE FM, Jamaica’s first all-Reggae radio station, and became widely known for hosting the long-running Sunday programme “Memories,” which celebrated classic Jamaican music and its history.
His contribution to the nation’s cultural landscape was recognised in 2018 when he was awarded the Order of Distinction for his services to broadcasting and the entertainment industry.
Clarke continued to remain active in broadcasting in recent years, hosting programmes beyond IRIE FM and maintaining a presence on the airwaves up until shortly before his death.
Tributes from colleagues and listeners have highlighted his role in promoting Jamaican artists and shaping the radio scene, noting the depth of his passion for music and storytelling.
Nationwide news organisations and industry figures are remembering Clarke as a pioneering broadcaster whose influence extended far beyond the studio.
