Kingston, Jamaica — A district constable has been charged after he was allegedly caught with ganja and other prohibited items at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road in Kingston.
The accused, 25-year-old District Constable Robert Campbell from Point Hill, St. Catherine, has been charged with dealing in ganja and bringing prohibited articles into a correctional centre. Campbell, who is assigned to Detention and Courts, was formally charged on Thursday following a ruling by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
According to reports, the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. last Friday while Campbell was in the barrack room of the correctional centre. It is alleged that while he was changing his clothes in preparation for work, a small parcel fell from his pocket. He reportedly attempted to conceal it by stepping on it, which raised the suspicion of his supervising corporal.
The supervisor retrieved the parcel, which was found to contain vegetable matter resembling ganja. A subsequent search of Campbell’s knapsack in his presence reportedly uncovered multiple parcels of vegetable matter resembling ganja, along with vegetable matter resembling tobacco, a USB cable, $20,650 in cash, a pack of Rizzla, and a lighter.
Campbell was taken into custody, and a file was submitted to the ODPP. Following a review, the ruling was made to formally charge him.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
