Two policemen have been freed of assault occasioning bodily harm charges after making restitution of $255,000 to the complainant.
Constables Paul Banbury and Jason Hunter, both attached to the Spanish Town Police Station, were charged in connection with an alleged assault on a man in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
The charges stemmed from an October 17, 2024 incident during which the complainant alleged that he was struck all over his body by the policemen and suffered injuries.
The matter was reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which launched an investigation. Following the probe, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that the policemen should be charged.
When the case came before the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday, the complainant indicated that he wanted compensation and no longer wished to pursue the matter.
The Crown subsequently offered no evidence, resulting in both men being freed of the criminal charges.
The matter had been referred to mediation when it came before the court on March 24. Both policemen agreed to pay $255,000 in restitution, which was paid to the complainant in court on Friday.
