The Supreme Court has granted an injunction restraining dancehall entertainer Bounty Killer from making or publishing defamatory statements about fellow artiste Mr Vegas while a defamation lawsuit between the two remains before the court.
The order was handed down on Wednesday during a hearing related to legal action brought by Mr Vegas against the veteran deejay.
According to reports from the proceedings, the court directed that Bounty Killer be restrained, pending the outcome of the trial, from referring to Mr Vegas by name, photograph, or description in a manner that could damage his reputation.
Attorney-at-law Alexander Shaw, who is representing Mr Vegas, reportedly welcomed the ruling, arguing that the court’s decision protects his client’s reputation while maintaining the principle of freedom of expression.
However, the court did not grant all the restrictions requested by Mr Vegas’ legal team. Attorneys representing Bounty Killer indicated that the injunction applies specifically to future defamatory publications as the matter moves through the legal system.
The case reportedly stems from social media activity earlier this year that allegedly affected Mr Vegas’ reputation both locally and internationally.
Bounty Killer has denied the allegations, and his legal representatives are expected to challenge the claims during the trial.
A date for the continuation of the matter is expected to be determined by the court.
