Walter Koenig, best known for portraying Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series, has died at age 90.
His talent agent, Zachery McGinnis, confirmed that the actor died at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, Koenig graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, before studying acting at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse. He began securing television roles in the early 1960s.
Koenig joined Star Trek in 1967 during its second season, playing the young Russian navigator aboard the USS Enterprise. His energetic portrayal helped make Chekov a favourite among viewers.
He later returned to the role in the franchise’s films and remained a familiar presence at fan conventions, where he embraced the community that grew around the science-fiction series.
Beyond Star Trek, Koenig’s career included appearances in Babylon 5, Columbo and Futurama. He also worked as a writer and acting teacher.
