Russia has launched its largest drone assault of the war in Ukraine, deploying more than 900 unmanned aerial vehicles in a single coordinated हमला (attack), Ukrainian officials said Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in aerial warfare.
According to Ukraine’s air force, approximately 948 drones were launched over a 24-hour period, alongside cruise and ballistic missiles, targeting multiple regions across the country. The масштаб (scale) of the operation makes it the most extensive drone strike since the conflict began.
Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted or disabled the vast majority of the drones—estimated at around 95 percent. However, officials confirmed that several strikes penetrated defenses, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure.
Authorities reported multiple deaths and dozens of injuries, with residential buildings, energy facilities, and historic sites among the targets. In the western city of Lviv, a UNESCO-listed area sustained damage, underscoring the گسترده (wide-ranging) impact of the attacks beyond frontline regions.
Military analysts say the barrage reflects Russia’s growing reliance on high-volume drone tactics designed to overwhelm air defense systems. By launching hundreds of relatively low-cost drones simultaneously, attackers aim to exhaust interceptors and increase the likelihood that some projectiles reach their targets.
“This represents a shift toward saturation attacks,” said one defense expert. “Even highly capable air defense systems can be strained by the sheer number of incoming threats.”
Ukrainian officials renewed calls for additional air defense support from Western allies, warning that continued large-scale assaults could place further pressure on already stretched الدفاعات (defenses).
The attack comes amid a broader intensification of hostilities, with both Russia and Ukraine increasing their use of drones in recent months. Ukraine has also carried out long-range strikes into Russian territory, signaling an evolving phase of the conflict characterized by expanding drone warfare.
As the war enters another year, the unprecedented scale of this latest assault highlights the growing أهمية (importance) of unmanned systems in modern combat—and the mounting challenges they pose for civilian protection and military defense alike.
