A report initially treated as a kidnapping involving a 25-year-old man has been clarified as a domestic-related misunderstanding, according to investigators from the Specialized Investigation Branch (SIB).
The incident, which was reported on March 16, suggested that the man—at first believed to be an Antiguan national—had been abducted. The claim prompted concern after his brother, residing in Antigua, reportedly received a ransom demand from individuals said to be holding him.
Authorities further indicated that the man’s mother transferred money to a person in Jamaica in response to the alleged demand.
The report led to a coordinated police operation at a premises in Kingston. However, upon arrival, officers discovered the man at the location in the company of his girlfriend. He was found to be in good condition and not under any form of restraint.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that the situation arose from a domestic dispute. The man later confirmed that he is Jamaican, lives in Antigua, and had travelled to the island to visit his partner.
Superintendent Oral Henry has since cautioned the public against making inaccurate reports, stressing the strain such claims place on law enforcement resources.
“Investigations into kidnapping allegations demand significant manpower and funding. False reports not only waste these resources but can also undermine real cases and constitute a criminal offence,” Henry stated.
Police confirmed that investigations surrounding the matter remain ongoing.
