A significant upgrade project is set to take place at the RIU Palace Montego Bay, as the Spanish hotel chain moves to enhance its luxury offering in Jamaica’s tourism sector.
According to Frank Sondern, Regional Director for RIU Hotels in Jamaica, the property will close for approximately four months to allow for extensive renovation works. The shutdown is scheduled to run through the end of August, with reopening planned for December 12.
The Montego Bay resort, regarded as RIU’s sole “elite category” property in Jamaica, will undergo a comprehensive transformation. Planned improvements include upgraded guest rooms, redesigned shared spaces, and enhancements to dining facilities.
Sondern, speaking at a press briefing tied to the company’s 25th anniversary in Jamaica, indicated that the project reflects the group’s ongoing investment strategy. He noted that several areas of the hotel will be modernized, including restaurants such as the steakhouse, alongside existing dining options.
The refurbishment will also introduce new luxury features aimed at boosting the hotel’s competitiveness in the all-inclusive market. Among the additions are 10 rooms to be converted into swim-up units, each offering private pool access.
RIU first established its presence in Jamaica in 2001 with the opening of its Negril property, marking the introduction of its all-inclusive model locally. Since then, the company has expanded to seven hotels across key resort areas including Montego Bay, Falmouth, and Ocho Rios.
Sondern disclosed that approximately US$287 million has been invested in upgrading RIU properties in Jamaica over the past five years. He added that additional refurbishment projects are already being planned as the company continues to strengthen its footprint in the island’s tourism industry.
The current renovation is expected to further position the Montego Bay property within the premium segment of Jamaica’s competitive hospitality market.
