A police officer facing serious criminal charges in connection with a fatal off-duty shooting in St Mary has been granted bail by the parish court.
Constable Alwyn Hill appeared before the St Mary Parish Court on Thursday, where he was offered bail in the sum of $750,000. The bail conditions include one to three sureties as well as mandatory reporting requirements.
The charges stem from a 2025 incident in Preston Hill, St Mary, which left one man dead and a woman injured. Investigations indicate that the confrontation reportedly developed from an argument that escalated into a physical altercation between Hill and the deceased, identified as Rocardo Small.
Following a probe by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) directed that Hill be charged with multiple offences. These include murder under common law, use of a firearm to commit a felony under the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act, and wounding with intent under the Offences Against the Person Act.
The case forms part of a broader pattern of legal action involving members of the security forces. Since January 2024, a total of 61 law enforcement personnel have been charged in matters arising from INDECOM investigations.
So far in 2026, charges have been laid against five members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and one correctional officer.
